Not to alarm you...

But Arod is on pace to:
Bat .400
Hit 126 HR
Hit 306 RBIs
Hit 234 runs

Also, a single tear as 1/9 of the baseball season has passed.

Also, orioles -- still above 0.500

Also - not to argue with jacob - not only did the warriors lead the league in steals, blocks, and turn-overs forced, they also led the league in number of points they let other people score against them AT 107 PPG. I don't know if that is because of the rocky start to the season (maybe since they gelled they have only let people score 102 PPG), but they do seem to let people score on them. Imagine if they didn't steal the ball or force so many turnovers. They would be giving up like 120-125 points a game. I like the warriors because they have constructed a way to play the game of basketball that i have never seen before -- and it works!

And the Yankees are on pace to win 72 games.

True - do you think there is an inverse relationship? (Arod's excellence as a player) = (How good his team is)^(-1)?

Amazingly, what I just said is true. There is a negative correlation between the number of wins that Arods team had and his
(1) number of HRs (-.599)
(2) slugging % (-.555)
(3) RBIs (-.366)
(4) OPS (-.352)
(5) Runs (-.323)

In conclusion --> AROD WILL HIT 126 HRS and the YANKEES WILL FINISH 4TH IN THE DIVISION.

or.

AROD WILL HIT ONLY 14 HRS and the YANKEES WILL WIN ALL OF THEIR REMAINING GAMES

you heard it here first.

SIMON --

oh yeah!! that whole points-per-game allowed usually IS the first marker of defense. so in fairness to c-bark, that's probably what was on his mind. in fact, all through february that was going to be my massive post, asking how it could be possible to lead the league in steals/turnovers/etc but still be SO BAD at defense, allowing more points than the even the wizards. but really they only became an elite defensive team (if we can call such a short sample size elite) after nellie switched to the small lineup. their on-ball pressure really does compensate for the lack of an under-the-hoop shot blocker. and since everyone on the whole team is 6'6", they often can block shots anyway if they are matched up against a smaller guard. (Biedrins obviously tallied up a lot of those regular season blocks and now is less useful)

ALSO -- I think I feel less animosity towards the yankees than most normal non-yankee fans. I think this is because in between 1987 and 2006, I had no significant attachment to the tigers, and therefore, no painful thorn in my side every year. I can get into rooting against them (and really, really rooting against them) but only if I find something to like about the other team (like the 2004 sox). So when they are amassing regular season wins (or losses) against the Devil Rays or whatever, I just don't feel the passionate anti-yankee sentiment that seems to be a common bond between every other non-yankee baseball fan. I *do* understand this from basketball, because I just did not like the style and attitude of the kobe-shaq laker dynasty AT ALL. but, i don't understand the "i can't have derek jeter on my fantasy team" thing. it still bugs me that i couldn't trade the fucking best shortstop in baseball for value because a bunch of whiners would rather root for him to have a bad season. I think the world is POST-kobe-hating, and that's a good thing. I think it is really stupid that kobe bryant will never win the mvp, because he is far and away the best basketball player of the decade, and in most individual years as well. Dirk Nowitzki can do NOTHING that kobe bryant can do. If Chauncey Billups didn't automatically win the mvp for leading the pistons to the best record, then I don't understand why Dirk gets a free pass for "leading" the mavericks. And similarly, we understand that Nash is good. A 3rd MVP would just send a message that the league has a very short-term memory with their definition of the award, and once Nash won it the first time, they explained in justifying their selection that the most significant factor was "making your teammates better." now they're like, oh, most valuable players, well, does kobe make his teammates better?? That's not the MVP, dudes, that's called "POINT GUARD OF THE YEAR TROPHY" I think derek jeter should be point guard of the year and kobe should be AL MVP. Justin Morneau?? He can be sixth man of the year, beacuse he's probably about the 6th best player on the twins last year (santana, liriano, nathan, mauer, and, well, okay, maybe he's the 5th best)

for a better argument against either nash or nowitzki for mvp this season, see the photo at the top of this post:

also, don't get me wrong, i was so excited that the tigers almost "broke up" the yankees the way that the lakers had to be dismantled after they lost to the pistons (payton/malone/shaq/phil jackson -- ALL gone) . . . when they were talking about torre and a-rod and all that. there probably could be no higher achievement in baseball than breaking up that disgusting conglomeration of hired sluggers. STILL, my point is, I only feel marginally motivated to root for them to fail. And certainly NOT in the realm of fantasy sports, where stocking your team with likeable characters is something my sister would do, not a rational way to win a 64-pixel imaginary trophy. Which is why, MIKE HELLER, I do not believe that I am interested in your JD DREW FOR MAGGLIO offer.

Actual equation for Arod (or so):

# of Wins = -0.7(# of HRs) + 114

So... my updated prediction is...

If Arod does not hit another HR - Yankees win 104 games.

If Arod stays on pace - Yankees win 26 games.
